The Philippines is one of the leading countries with the fastest deforestation rate. With fast growing cities the forests in which I live are being cut down. As the human population grows and tends to their needs with no care about which species, they hurt the number of Philippine eagles are decreasing. As humans invade our natural habitat, we are given less area to hunt. People have killed us to protect domestic animals or to eliminate competition for a sought out prey species. We are the largest raptors in the world and with our beautiful range of color we have become a popular target to poachers. Begging in the 1960’s we have become a desirable acquisition for zoos and private collectors. Collectors have stolen young from our nests and sold them to the highest bidder. Our position at the top of the food chain makes us vulnerable to toxins and pesticides which build up in our prey species. This is called biomagnification. I hope that one day humans will help us to come off of the endangered species list and learn to protect other species in our habitat.
Starting in 2012 The Philippine Eagle Foundation and The Peregrine Fund (TPF), with financial support from the “Wildlife Without Borders” program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began the project “Philippine Eagle Conservation" in Mindanao, Philippines. PEF conducted a one year research on me and other Philippine eagles. The satellite tagged the first female eagle in mount Kitangland Range National Park. Due to this research they came to the conclusion that a breeding pair of of eagle requires from twenty five to fifty miles of of rain forest to survive. Other organizations have put in efforts to save what little of us remain. More than 21 eagles have been raised as part of a captive breeding program. Workers at that center hope that the captive birds- as well as birds that have been rescued after being found injured- will one day be released back into the protected forests in which we live. Organizations have been doing as much as they can to keep us alive with what little money they have. By donating to http://www.peregrinefund.org/projects/philippine-eagle . I hope to get off the endangered species list by showing people how important we are to the environment. The research being conducted by organizations has helped people become aware of the consequences of deforestation and pollution. With the help of organizations and your donations I believe that we can come off of the list and thrive in our natural habitat.
Humans can help save us by stopping deforestation, which is a big contributor to us being on the endangered species list. You can also donate to our cause. Another major thing you can do to help save us is by protecting our habitat and stopping poaching. Many laws have been been passed to protects the last of us. There are also severe penalties if you break one of these laws. Such as jail time and a fine up to 100,000$. This is how human can help protect the rest of us that remain.
Everyday, I deal with terrible factors that have mainly been caused by human activity. A prime example of a density dependent factor is competition. Since there are fewer resources available, I must fight constantly with other animals for daily necessities. A density independent factor is deforestation. Poachers bring large tools and machines to cut down our forests and homes to build their own shelters. More and more factors come into play in my homes, rapidly shrinking the numbers of my kind.
In my ecosystem, humans have absolutely adulterated nearly everything. Their large machines not only destroy our homes, but also pollute our air supply. Our nests, homes and families have all been torn apart due to the monstrosity that is the human population. Everyday, humans require more land to build recreational facilities, their shelters, and more. They take our land from us, and send us to fend for ourselves. Another large problem is the poaching. My kind is one of the most beautiful raptors alive, and the poachers continue to kill us for beauty. Although it is illegal to poach my kind, people still persist in hunting us down for their own selfish reasons and personal gain.
